Job description: The Associated Press seeks an Interactive and Graphics Editor for its Regional Desk in Phoenix, Arizona. The Western Interactive and Graphics Editor leads the AP's Interactive and graphics content for the 13-state region (Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California, Alaska and Hawaii). Working with the regional editor, deputy and other managers, the Interactive Editor leads staffers in the bureau to produce stellar online and graphics coverage from the region by creating interactive, multimedia presentations and developing visual storytelling talent in the bureaus. The incumbent will work on both spot and enterprise projects, and will be the point person for multimedia training in the region. This person will work closely with bureau news editors to develop graphics and multimedia content for the best stories in the region. He or she makes assignments for journalists in the bureaus. In coordination with the Interactive and Graphics Department in New York, the Interactive Editor will ensure that top stories are packaged with interactives, graphics, slideshows, and/or raw multimedia. The incumbent will close very closely with video and photo editors, especially on enterprise stories. The Interactive Editor fills in for the assistant, deputy and/or the editor when necessary, taking over scheduling, approval of overtime and all other management functions for the regional desk. Supervises a regional video editor who is in charge of working with bureaus on video storytelling.This person also makes management decisions for bureaus regarding multimedia when a local manager is not available. The Interactive Editor takes the lead on evaluating the multimedia work from the region and contributes to appraisals. This position takes the lead on planning, budgeting and goal-setting for multimedia in the region, including measuring success. The Interactive Editor works closely with bureau chiefs and other business managers on any membership, product or customer issues related to multimedia and is responsive to those issues. Requirements: - Expertise with Flash, and at least one of these other areas: Geographical Information Systems, databases, data analysis, and statistics, 3-D rendering. - Knowledge of Final Cut Pro and Soundslides. - Excellent understand of Web standards, typography and layout - Excellent understanding of information design and standards for different screens and formats, such as print, Online and mobile. - Should be at ease with basic mathematics, and use of Microsoft Office Excel, Microsoft Access or similar software. - Good knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office suite. - Highly motivated team player with strong analytical, detailed and interpersonal skills. - Must be able to work independently and in a team - Ability to conduct research on a variety of subject, including science, politics, finance, international and domestic affairs - Excellent news judgment - Must be able to communicate well verbally and in writing - Ability to quickly and accurately grasp complex technical concepts - Ability to work in a high-pressure deadline environment -Ability to serve as a leader and trainer for other journalists learning about multimedia storytelling.
