Job Bank: Graphic Artist, San Jose

Job description: The San Jose Mercury News has an immediate opening for an information graphic artist. Candidates must be able to draw, research and write information graphics such as charts, diagrams and maps using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and/or FreeHand. They must also be able to conceptualize and draw quality illustrations. Knowledge in any of the following is a huge plus: GIS mapping, data visualization using public databases, Javascript, HTML/CSS, developing iPad/iPhone apps and Flash. The ideal candidate would be a jack-or-jill-of-all-trades — someone who can produce content for both print and online. A college degree is required, and previous experience at a newspaper or other media outlet is preferred but not essential.

This is a fun, casual environment — this IS California after all — but there will often be tight deadlines and heavy workloads. Those who have a sense of humor, a collegial work ethic and an energetic personality will fit right in.

Salary will be based on experience. To apply, send a URL or PDF of your portfolio and resume to pai@mercurynews.com.

Thanks and good luck!
